Where Is Oulu and Why Should You Visit?

Oulu, located in northern Finland, is a vibrant coastal city by the Gulf of Bothnia. Oulu is known for its innovative tech industry and University, beautiful natural landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. Oulu is a perfect stop on your way to Lapland or a road trip to Lofoten in Northern Norway. The city is home to around 200 000 people and it's extremely walkable since the region doesn't have any hills and the city center is quite small.

Oulu offers something to do for every season with its long summer days and snowy winters. In my opinion, Oulu is especially perfect for a summer weekend trip from Helsinki since the city has over 20 public beaches to enjoy.

How to Get to Oulu

Getting to Oulu is simple, whether you’re traveling from other parts of Finland or internationally:

  • By Air: Oulu Airport (OUL) is Finland's third busiest airport, offering direct flights from Helsinki and other European cities. The airport is just 20 minutes from the city center by bus or taxi.

  • By Train: Oulu is well-connected by rail to major Finnish cities like Helsinki, Tampere, and Rovaniemi. The train journey from Helsinki takes about six hours. You can buy tickets straight from the VR.fi website (the Finnish Railways).

  • By Car or Bus: If you prefer a scenic road trip, driving to Oulu provides beautiful views of Finland’s countryside. If you're traveling from the South, I recommend driving along the West Coast and making a stop to see the famous Kalajoki dunes. Long-distance buses also operate from Helsinki and other cities.
